In Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout Finch is drawn to misunderstood characters, ostracized or isolated. This may be as much true of her younger self as it is of her older self, engaged in the retrospective of storytelling. The similarity of one alienated character to another--Tom Robinson, Dill Harris, Boo Radley--is an artistic touch, a sociological insight, and an indication of Scout's tendency to find in others the stories that resonate in her own psyche.
